Document Release 15.1 (30/06/2015)
Preliminary Remarks
Français | English |
---|---|
Pour connaitre les derniers Service Packs disponibles, voir: AIX support site | This document describes the procedure to follow when updating an already existing AIX 6.1 system. The Latest Technical Level delivered by BULL is 6.1.9.200 (according to the bos.mp64 fileset Level number). So, Technology Level 9, Service Pack 8 (6100-09-08-1642). Warning : updating a system to a lower modification level is not supported (which is possible even when updating to a higher Technology Level) So, before updating the system, please check the Technology and Service Packs levels returned by the oslevel -s command (6100-<TL>-<SP>-<DATE>). If <DATE> is less than or equal to 1642, updating to the TL9 SP8 level will lead to update the system to a higher modification level. In other cases, the latest SP for TL9 is needed to be installed. To know the last available Service Packs, please go to : AIX support site |
Important : prendre en compte les différentes remarques ( Technical Bulletin ) sur les installations en AIX 6.1 avant de commencer la mise à jour : AIX 6.1 Installations Tips | Important : have a look to remarks ( Technical Bulletin ) about AIX 6.1 installations before starting the update : AIX 6.1 Installations Tips |
Procedure Contents
U7.1 - Media and SRB
- DVD: AIX Version 6.1 TL9 SP7 (76743807-101) if you are updating from a TL less than 6.1TL09 ( There is no preload for the version 6.1TL09SP8 )
- or DVD: AIX Version 6.1 TL9 SP8 Update (76743837-101) if you are updating from TL/SP 6.1TL09 between SP01 and SP07.
- SRB (Software Release Bulletin) is not provided for this SP.
WARNING : if some Expansion Pack packages are installed (see the Readme ) and especially Java6_64.sdk, they will not be updated using the AIX update DVD.
VERY IMPORTANT : please check on the Expansion PackRelease Notes.
In case of trouble, please call your support representative.
U7.2 - Cluster Node Update
If the server to be updated is a cluster node, please refer to the HACMP Upgrade procedures at the High Availability Products for AIX WEB site (Bull internal access only), to see if you need to install HA PTFs.
You have to stop HACMP with takeover option on that node, using the smit clstop
command, before AIX update.
U7.3 - Precautions
- In any case, perform a bootable backup of your configuration (rootvg) and save other Volume Groups.
- To check if some efixes were installed on this system, run :
emgr -l
If you get some, you have to check that the APARs corrected by the efixes are corrected too by the new AIX Release you are going to install, otherwise new efixes will be needed after AIX update. Please call the Support representative for help.
- It is strongly recommended to run the system in single user mode:
- Replace the following
/etc/inittab
line:init:2:initdefault:
with
init:s:initdefault: - If your system resides on a Fiber Disk, do not reboot now, otherwise reboot the system, using:
shutdown -Fr
- Replace the following
U7.4 - Fibre Channel Disk Subsystems Preparation
- If your system does not include Fibre Channel Disk Sub-systems, just ignore this section.
- If your system includes Fibre Channel NDAS CX200/300/400/500/600/700 and (or) EMC Symmetrix Sub-systems, check the flare and base software release at the EMC CLARiiON Storage Subsystems WEB site (for Bull employees only). You can, at this point:
- update the DAS flares
- update Navisphere 6 to the latest level
- update Powerpath to the latest level ( It is strongly recommended to update Powerpath to the last technical level , otherwise you could have dead path )
- If your system resides on a fibre disk (rootvg on an hdiskpower device)
if you need to update Powerpath, perform the following :
WARNING : a serious defect is reported by EMC about PowerPath 5.5 or 5.5 P01 witch can in various deployments or migration plans change the planning or the use of this product. It is strongly recommended to use the P06 release for PowerPath 5.5 version or to update to Powerpath 5.7 version (end of support december 2016) or PowerPath 6.0.
- run :
pprootdev off
thenshutdown -Fr
- stop all the applications, umount the filesystems and varyoff the VGs which reside on hdiskpower devices
- stop navisphere :
rc.agent stop
- check on which hdiskpower device is rootvg :
lspv grep rootvg
- let's suppose that rootvg is on hdiskpower<x>, then verify that rootvg hdisk is on the default SP :
powermt display dev=hdiskpower<x>
you must get the following :
- run :
rmdev -dl hdiskpower<x>
- run :
bootlist -m normal -o
and check that the first hdisk in the list is affected to the current SP - install the last Powerpath release using :
smit install_latest
- restart navisphere :
rc.agent start
- configure Powerpath :
powermt config
- run :
pprootdev on
thenshutdown -Fr
- after rebooting run :
pprootdev fix
- Owner : default=SP <y> , current = SP <y>
Aix 6.1 Iso Download
if you don't need to update Powerpath, run :
pprootdev fix
U7.5 - Disk Subsystems
If your system does not include disk subsystems, just ignore this section.
If your system includes disk subsystems, all activity must be stopped: this is OK, since you are running in single user mode.
U7.6 - Install AIX updates
- To be able to install the Updates Media, perform the following commands:
export TERM=vt320
mount /opt
srcmstr &
/etc/methods/cfg64 &
/usr/sbin/cron &
- Insert the 'AIX 6.1 TL9 SP6 Updates' Media then run:
smit update_all
In the SMIT menu, select the options as below and run the update:
- With certain combinations of updates, the update process may have to be run a second time in order to apply all updates in a package. Checking the output of the 'oslevel -r' and 'oslevel -s' commands for the expected values after an update is recommended. Until the update is run a second time, the output of the oslevel command may indicate that the package is not fully installed. So, if needed run a second :
smit update_all
- Warning : when updating from 6100-05 or lower, fileset devices.chrp.base.ServiceRM fails to install and oslevel does not return the 6100-09 value (see APAR IV53977). To correct this issue, you need to install first the devices.chrp.base.ServiceRM 1.5.2.0 level, then update the filesetusing theAIX 6.1 TL9 UpdatesDVD.
- Note: You can check too if a more recent Service Pack is delivered at : https://support.bull.com/ols/product/system/aix/fix/cs/packs/ml/
then install it run:smit update_all
In the SMIT menu, select the options as below and run the update: - check the result of :
- If you get the following message at the end of the update process:
- If your machine model is one of the following Escala models: PL240 / PL420 / PL820 / PL1600 / PL3200, then the firmware of the machine must be set at the latest level to be able to boot. Check the firmware at: and do not worry if you still get the same warning message, running the bosboot command after rebooting your system.
- no problem to boot on Power5, Power5+, Power6, Power7 and Power8 platforms
oslevel -s
/xcode-46-3-free-download-for-mac.html.
If the oslevel doesn't match with 6100-09-08-1642, it's mainly due to the fileset : adde.v2.common.rte .
Rerun smit update_all. It will be correctly installed.
your system may not boot, depending on your machine model:
U7.7 - Install the Bull Enhancement
VERY IMPORTANT : Bullenh media are no longer provided
- You can get the rsf product and san tools from the AIX support site
- The EMC.AIX5.xxx software is downloable from the EMC site
If you are running AIX 5.3, 6.1 with VNX please use minimum EMC.AIX.5.3.0.5.tar.Z.
U7.8 - Reboot the system
- If you use NIS, it is strongly recommended to remove the
bos.net.nisplus
fileset. - Before rebooting, restore the multi-user mode by replacing in
/etc/inittab
the line:init:s:initdefault:
withinit:2:initdefault
- Reboot now the system, by running:
shutdown -Fr
- It is recommended to perform a backup of the system (using the
smit mksysb
command).
U7.9 - Tasks to perform after the update
- If this update is performed within a HACMP cluster, restart HA using the
smit clstart
command, and update the other cluster node(s). - Otherwise, you can now perform the
varyonvg
command on the de-activated Volume Groups, thenmount
the filesystems back.
- Run:
oslevel -s
if you don't get 6100-09-08-1642 (in case of installation with Service Pack 8) :
- if the TL is wrong, run oslevel -rl 6100-09
- if the SP is wrong, run oslevel -sl 6100-09-08-1642
to get the filesets which cause the AIX level to be wrong. If you don't use these filesets, just remove them (installp -u <Fileset>), otherwise call your support representative.
